A Rocking Horse or a Sleeping Giant?

A Rocking Horse or a Sleeping Giant.
Let’s get real: if your startup hasn’t hit serious growth after three to five years from the start date, you’re either a Rocking Horse or a Sleeping Giant. Brutal, I know. But better to face the facts than keep living in founder fantasyland.
So, what’s a Rocking Horse? Picture a kid’s toy: all that rocking back and forth, but it never actually goes anywhere. Or, like the old game Packman, you remember, keep eating everyone, yet never get bigger. That’s your classic startup treadmill—lots of noise, endless product launches, press releases, “pivots,” and a burn rate that would make a VC sweat through their Patagonia vest. But real progress? Nada. These companies are masters at staying busy while standing still. They’ll chew through capital, hire, fire, rebrand, relaunch, and still end up at square one—just with fancier business cards.
Now, the Sleeping Giant. This is the rare beast. Most people miss them because, well, they’re sleeping. These are the startups that made real moves years ago, then slipped off the radar. They’re not out there hyping their latest “AI-powered” feature or collecting participation trophies at pitch events. Nope. They’re quietly stacking wins behind the scenes, building something that actually matters, and waiting for the perfect moment to wake up and eat the market alive. Think of them as silent assassins—while everyone else is busy making noise, they’re plotting.
For investors, this is where it gets tricky. How do you tell the difference? Spotting a Rocking Horse is easy. They’re everywhere, burning cash and issuing press releases like confetti. But a Sleeping Giant? That’s detective work. They’re not begging for the spotlight. They’re not draining your fund every two months. They’re off the grid, prepping for a comeback that’s going to leave everyone else looking silly.
So here’s the real question: which one are you looking at? Is this company just rocking back and forth, getting nowhere? Or is it quietly biding its time, ready to dominate when the moment’s right? If you can’t tell the difference, you’re not paying enough attention.
Bottom line: don’t get fooled by all the movement. Look for real momentum. Because at the end of the day, no one wants to back a toy horse that never leaves the porch. Find the giant—even if it’s snoring.
